February 23, 2020 - Penélope Cruz, Hollywood star and brand ambassador for Costa Crociere since 2018, christened the Costa Smeralda, Costa Crociere's first LNG ship, in the port of Savona last night. According to the shipping company's statement, Costa Smeralda represents "the best of Italy in one place ”.
As expected, the Costa Smeralda, the new flagship of the, was christened last night in Savona Costa Cruises committed with great pomp. Godmother and guest star was the Hollywood actress Penélope Cruz from Spain. She has been the Costa Crociere brand ambassador since November 2018 and was seen in this capacity for the first time as a mermaid in a video sequence.

The Italian star chef Bruno Barbieri, another guest star at the event, designed and presented a special gala cocktail to the guests. Michael Thamm and Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises, were present as representatives of the Group CEO Costa Group and Carnival Asia.
Costa celebrates the Costa Smeralda as “a real homage to Italy. ... The ship celebrates Italy and gives guests the opportunity to experience the best of Italy in one place. Furniture, lighting, fabrics, upholstery and accessories were specially made in Italy for the new flagship by 15 partners who are all ambassadors of Italian excellence ”. In the “CoDe - Costa Design Museum” on board the ship, Italian design is presented and celebrated.

The new building, measured at 185.010 GT and counting 2.612 cabins, began its maiden voyage with a delay due to the construction side. The cruise ship Costa Smeralda offers the following trendsetting features and concepts:
- An innovative propulsion system based on LNG;
- Reducing emissions;
- Desalination plants for sea water to meet daily water supply needs;
- An intelligent energy management system to minimize energy consumption;
- Recycling of plastic, paper, glass and aluminum;
- Avoiding food waste;
- Recovery of surplus food for social projects.
After the baptism, the Costa Smeralda completes one-week trips in the western Mediterranean. Destination ports are Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia / Rome and La Spezia. In summer the new building will also stop in Cagliari / Sardinia.
