Fire on AIDAnova

October 25, 2018 - On Wednesday night in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, the brand new AIDAnova fire alarm was triggered. The fire was extinguished very quickly. According to the shipyard, the fire affects two cabins, "but not a really big story". Nobody was injured. All people on board had been evacuated.

The cause of the fire is searched for. The test drive in the North Sea planned for the coming days has been postponed. AIDAnova should be handed over to AIDA Cruises on November 15th in Bremerhaven according to plan. It is still unclear whether this deadline can be met. Under such circumstances, the short trips to European destinations included in the program before the maiden voyage could also be at risk. The maiden voyage starts on December 2nd, 2018 to the Canaries.

AIDAnova is the first cruise ship to run entirely on liquefied natural gas (LNG). After the successful Emspassage, the ship was refueled with LNG for the first time on October 18, 2018. Almost 3.500 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas fit into the three special tanks. The AIDAnova can operate at sea and in port for up to two weeks on one LNG tank. According to the shipping company, the use of the new technology reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80 percent; CO² emissions are reduced by a further 20 percent.

The ship is measured with more than 183.900 GT. The number of cabins is given as more than 2.500. The ship's guests can choose from 20 cabin variants, 17 restaurants and 17 bars.
