AIDAcosma - keel laying of AIDA's newest cruise ship in Rostock

October 15, 2019 - On the occasion of the keel laying, the name and the first route of the new building were announced: The ship will AIDAcosma and will be offering trips from Kiel to the Norwegian fjord landscapes and the Baltic Sea from summer 2021.

On October 15, 2019, the first building block for the second LNG cruise ship from AIDA Cruises was laid on the keel at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock. The two trainees Charleen Hoffmann (AIDA Cruises) and Kenny Schaft (Meyer Werft) placed the traditional lucky coin under the first of a total of 90 blocks. the AIDAcosma is after the AIDAnova the second LNG cruise ship from AIDA Cruises.

Together with the managing director of Meyer Werft Tim Meyer and the head of Rostock's Neptun shipyard Manfred Ossevorth, AIDA President Felix Eichhorn welcomed numerous other guests from politics and business, including Birgit Hesse, President of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Parliament, Rostock's Lord Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen and Rostocks Mayor Regine Lück.
Harry Glawe, Minister for Economics, Building and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, emphasized the importance of the maritime location on the Warnow in his greeting and praised the high level of commitment of AIDA Cruises.

AIDA President Felix Eichhorn: “With AIDAcosma we are consistently continuing our sustainable growth. The keel laying of our second LNG cruise ship here in Rostock is at the same time an expression of the economic and innovative strength of our company in Rostock and all of Northern Germany. ”In 2018, AIDA Cruises contributed more than 1,6 billion euros to economic growth in Northern Germany. The economic output at the Rostock site alone (excluding shipbuilding) was around 160 million euros, according to the results of a study by Deloitte & Touche in collaboration with the Universities of Hamburg and Genoa. “AIDA stands for around 8.200 direct and indirect jobs at our suppliers here in the north. With our investments in the development and use of sustainable technologies, we provide important impulses for research and science clusters throughout Germany, ”continues Felix Eichhorn.

By 2023, by building AIDAcosma and a third LNG cruise ship with investments of more than two billion euros in Germany, the company will contribute to further added value and the creation of secure jobs in shipbuilding and the maritime supply industry.

With a gross tonnage of 183.900 GT, AIDAcosma will have 20 decks, be 337 meters long and offer space for 2.600 cabins. The fun park at the stern of the ship is new with a children's pool, a double water slide and the water slide. For the first time, there is a boulder wall on the outside sports deck. The pool deck at the stern extends over the entire width of the ship. The icing on the cake is the breathtaking infinity pool. More places in the sun can be found on the three step-like sundecks above. Guests are spoiled with culinary delights in 17 restaurants and 23 bars. The variety of connoisseurs is enriched by a new restaurant: In the Beach House Restaurant, light summer delicacies are served. The interior in soft cream and sand tones exudes a pure holiday mood. The specialty restaurant Mamma Mia is also new and offers homemade pasta and fresh Italian cuisine with on-site service. The numerous public areas also include the theatrium, shops, a disco, a fitness area and the spacious Body & Soul Organic Spa as well as the clubs for minis, kids and teens.

In its premiere season in summer 2021, from May to October, AIDAcosma starts from Kiel on two fantastic routes to the north. Every week the ship sets course for the Norwegian fjords and some of the most beautiful cities on the Baltic Sea. Depending on the travel date, AIDAcosma stays overnight in St. Petersburg, Tallinn or Helsinki. Anyone who would like to secure their place right away can make a reservation for a trip with immediate effect. The official booking start is on November 21, 2019.

With the keel-laying of AIDAcosma, the company is continuing on its course and making a further contribution to reducing emissions in cruise shipping. In 2023 the third LNG cruise ship from AIDA Cruises “Made in Germany” will be on its way. Thanks to the use of LNG, emissions of fine dust and sulfur oxides are almost completely avoided, and nitrogen oxide and CO2 emissions are sustainably reduced.
